Why Málaga?

Known for its rich history and welcoming locals, Málaga offers a true taste of Spanish tradition. Away from typical tourist spots, the city is located in the beautiful region of Andalucía and provides an ideal environment for students to fully engage in Spanish culture and language.

Founded by the Phoenicians in 770 BC, it is one of the world’s oldest cities, offering students on school trips to Málaga a variety of sights and iconic landmarks to visit like the Alcazaba, an 11th-century Moorish fortress and the Roman Theatre. Other key points of interest include world-class art museums such as the Picasso Museum, and the Centre Pompidou Málaga.

There are also plenty of opportunities for students to immerse themselves in authentic Andalucían traditions, from traditional flamenco dancing and festivals like the Feria de Málaga to trying local delicacies such as espeto de sardinas (grilled sardines) and gazpacho.

With its stunning beaches on the Costa del Sol, mild climate, and close proximity to Andalucían cities like Nerja and Granada, Málaga provides the perfect mix of education, culture, and leisure, ensuring a memorable and enriching experience for language learners.

Top visits for Spanish Immersion school trips to Málaga

Historic Málaga and the Alcazaba

Take a guided tour of Málaga’s historic landmarks including the Alcazaba. This site introduces students to Spain’s Islamic history, architecture, and defence strategies, with its lush courtyards, intricate arches, and panoramic views.

Nearby, students can explore the Roman Theatre, located at the base of the Alcazaba, and learn about Málaga’s ancient roots. Strolling through the city center, they can visit Plaza de la Merced, Calle Larios, and Málaga Cathedral (“La Manquita”), enriching their understanding of the city’s layered history.

Bay of Málaga boat trip

Enjoy a scenic boat trip along the Bay of Málaga, a relaxing and scenic way to bond with peers and experience the city from a unique perspective. Departing from the bustling port area, the cruise glides past the iconic Málaga skyline, including views of the Cathedral, the Alcazaba, and Mount Gibralfaro.

Students can practise Spanish by engaging with the crew or participating in group activities on board. Dolphin spotting is a memorable highlight, as these playful creatures often accompany the boats.

Picasso Tour & Museum

The Picasso Tour is an essential stop for school trips to Málaga, taking students through the life and work of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists, Pablo Picasso. Begin at Plaza de la Merced, Picasso’s birthplace, now a museum showcasing personal items, sketches, and family artefacts.

The museum itself is housed in the 16th-century Buenavista Palace and offers over 200 works that trace Picasso’s artistic evolution. Interactive exhibits and workshops help students deepen their appreciation of Picasso’s groundbreaking styles, from Cubism to Surrealism.

Nerja & the caves

Nerja offers a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue that makes it a standout destination for Málaga Spanish immersion trips. This charming seaside town boasts beautiful beaches and the famous Balcón de Europa, a promenade with amazing coastal views.

Just outside the town lies the Nerja Caves, a network of vast caverns adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Students can explore the caves’ natural formations on guided tours that include visits to the massive central chamber, known as the Cataclysm Hall, and the Column of Hercules, one of the largest cave columns in the world.

Frigiliana - The White Village

Explore the picturesque, white-washed village of Figiliana, located about 70 km from Málaga. Known for its narrow cobbled streets and flower-adorned balconies, it’s a perfect place for students to immerse themselves in Andalucían culture.

Local markets and artisan shops provide an opportunity for students to practise conversational Spanish while sampling regional specialities such as honey and olive oil. Meanwhile, Frigiliana’s Moorish heritage can be seen in its Mudejar architecture, offering a glimpse into its rich history.
